The Nomination Document defines the bid areas, indicates the ways in which the proposed site meets a number of the UNESCO criteria for World Heritage Sites, and makes the case for the international importance of the area. This document includes a summary of the history of hard rock mining in Cornwall and West Devon from antiquity, through the period of the Industrial Revolution to the present day; identifying the roles of key inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs in the development of mining and allied technologies and in making Cornwall the world leader in this field during the first half of the 19th century.

Economic Impact Assessment downloads
This study assesses the economic impact of the proposed Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

The key elements of the study are:

  • The Baseline. This establishes the current situation in Cornwall and West Devon in terms of the volume and value of tourism primarily motivated to make a trip to the area because of mining heritage. It also establishes the extent of mining conservation activity in the area, and provides a set of socio-economic profiles of the mining areas making up the WHS bid.
  • Predicting Change. The future economic impact will stem from the changes to the current situation brought about by WHS inscription. The study also includes an assessment of the use of mining heritage attractions and facilities.

Marketing Strategy downloads

The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site  Project has developed a marketing strategy to inform and be an integral element of the Management Plan for the proposed WHS.

The marketing strategy elements of the Management Plan identify the overall policies and principal aims for the effective and sustainable presentation and promotion of the WHS.

Detailed objectives and actions will be defined at a later stage. The purpose of this strategy is to establish what these overarching, high level principle aims should be and to identify a consistent, integrated approach to achieving these aims, in part by identifying shared issues for all (or the majority) of the 10 bid areas.

These objectives of the Marketing Strategy are:

  • Establish current marketing activity and spend within the site areas and what results this produces.
  • Compare existing activity against the potential for sustainable growth / improvement but within the context of the WHS Vision and Aims. More specifically, this involved:

    • − auditing existing visitor attractions;
    • − assessing existing audiences/performance against capacity and potential for growth;
    • − identifying priorities for the marketing strategy which balances conservation with optimum usage;
    • − investigating the Cornish mining brand.

People's panel survey report

This Executive Summary highlights some of the key findings from the survey of members of the Cornwall People’s Panel. A postal survey was chosen as the most effective methodology for consulting within the time-frame allocated.  The survey was distributed during September 2004, allowing approximately a two-month response period.  2922 surveys were distributed in total and 1484 were returned, giving a response rate of 50.8%. Whilst the sample is not necessarily large enough for results to be statistically robust, they do provide an indicative snapshot of opinion.  For details of the demographic profile of respondents download the full report here (PDF: 250kb).
